Obsessed with making a good impression.

Updated: Jan 4, 2022

Dear reader on the other side, people like you and me love to make a good impression. And fundamentally, there's nothing wrong with that. We do it because we care. So don't feel bad if you have a persistent need to impress those around you.

Yes, you care about what they think. To you, what your colleagues, boss or parents think, matters. So you're constantly working on doing your best. You push yourself to the limit, to the point of feeling like your work sucks. Because you have drained yourself in such a way, that no more juice is coming out. It somehow feels like you are dry.

You want to do your best, but nothing good is coming out.

You want to show that you know how to do this, but nothing proves that you do.

You want to impress others with with your work. The work that you put so much effort into. But when you look at your work, it doesn't even look impressive to you.

So what's wrong? What are you doing wrong? Why are you working so hard, and the results not paying off?

What's wrong with you?

You start wondering why you care so much. And you wish you didn't care. But you do. You care, and you care a lot. And even though you want to believe that you don't care, you still care. You repeat to yourself over and over again ''I don't care about what they think, I am awesome''. But you know it's not true. You don't believe any of that.

So here's the thing. It's okay to care. The people around you do matter, and their opinions also do matter. But they don't define your value and your worth.

Don't beat yourself up for caring about what others think or say about you. Instead, go a little further and ask yourself, why do you care? What do their opinions mean to you? Why does it hurts when they don't validate your work? Why does it suck to no deliver your best work to them?

You will see, that you have put your worth and your value in their hands. You have given away your power. The problem is not that you care. The problem is that you believe that what they think, defines who you are as a person.

You're hungry

And that's why you're so obsessed with impressing other people. Because you're hungry for their approval. You're hungry for those words that will reassure that you matter. That your work matters. That your existence matters. That your life matters.

And I know that you're tired of feeling like that. And you should be. Because you deserve better. But the good news, is that you've come to the right place.
